Five years ago, home energy management applications (apps) started to take off. Today, a huge market has developed for these digital tools. The array of types and competing brands is bewildering—and there is often a cost and contract involved.

The myMTEMC app is tailored to your home. It is confidential and secure, available 24/7 and extremely accurate. Meter information specific to your electric account is at your fingertips. Plus, the format makes it simple to use.

By understanding when energy is used and for what purpose, MTEMC members can drill down to see what’s happening inside their homes. Easy-to-understand graphs incorporate power usage, dates, average temperature, meter readings and billing period. It’s clear to see how household demand corresponds to temperature. With a little data mining, you can also identify poor energy habits that result in waste.

The first tier of energy efficiency is structural, involving HVAC systems, insulation, sealing, weather-stripping, windows and doors. However, even homes built to save kilowatts can produce high bills when the second tier of energy efficiency—habit and behavior—is ignored.

Think for a moment how many times personal choice guides your use of electricity. Did someone turn up the thermostat setting a degree or two because they were cold? A one-degree difference in the thermostat set-point can increase energy use 3% to 5%! It would have been cheaper to grab a sweater out of the closet.

Actions involving electricity use result in reactions that we see on the amount-owed line of the electric bill a month or more later. Before the mobile app, trying to match energy habits and behaviors with usage was difficult.
