Separate incidents cause three power outages over a 13-hour span in Rutherford

Three separate incidences led to power outages for about 17,000 Rutherford County homes and business during a recent 13-hour span, Middle Tennessee Electric officials said.

The first and largest outage resulted from a TVA service disruption that impacted three MTEMC substations Tuesday. The outage, which lasted about 15 minutes, affected all of Smyrna and a good portion of northwest Rutherford County – more than 9,000 MTEMC members. The outage, which is still under investigation, occurred around 1:30 p.m.

A bird caused the second outage Tuesday when it flew into the Lascassas substation. The outage affected most of northeast Rutherford County, knocking out more than 6,000 MTEMC members. The outage started just after 4:30 and lasted for about 30 minutes.

Around 1:40 Wednesday morning, a car wreck took out a pole on Dilton Mankin Road, resulting in lost power to more than 1,400 MTEMC members southeast of Murfreesboro. It took MTEMC crews about an hour to restore power.

“It’s been a tough stretch,” said MTEMC spokesperson Chris Jones. “While these things happen, it’s rare to have them happen so close together in both time and location. Thankfully, the same members were not affected twice. Our employees responded extremely well, but we have some tired people right now.”
